On loss

There are a whole fuck load of people still going on about the loss on September 11th.

Let me tell you. You have no idea. And I know from experience that you don't really care about the loss. No one ever really does.

I assure you, nothing you have to say is going to change the lives of these people. Nothing you have to say is going to heal. Nothing you have to say is going to make them feel better. You won't make them feel proud. You aren't acting or speaking in memory of their family members or friends, but in support of your own patriotic pep rally bullshit. It makes you feel better. It does nothing for them. At worst, it may even offend them that their grief is being used for political purposes by the whole nation while they still don't have a memorial. Some of them never had a body to bury. Some of them have no closure. They all had to deal with this unseemly (but necessary and beautifully run) compensation program.

Death should not be a tool for country spirit. Not the deaths of soldiers, not the deaths of civilians, and not the deaths of foreign civilians... not even the deaths of our enemies. You want to say something meaningful about (yesterday)? Donate to the memorial fund. Or donate to the Wounded Warrior program. Or to VoteVets veterans committed to actually supporting out troops and vets instead of just offering platitudes. Or donate to the Red Cross working tirelessly to respond to all manner of humanitarian disasters.

Don't just talk about how very badly you feel about the things that happened nine years ago that ruined tens of thousands of lives in this country and millions of lives around the world, DO SOMETHING.

I know this makes me a BAD AMERICAN. That's okay. I've been a bad American for a long time.
